Flies are notorious for the irritating way that they can ruin a picnic or any outdoor function. They will relentlessly swarm your property if they sense that food is around. Unfortunately, these annoying flying insects don't just hang around outside. Instead, they will come into your home if given the chance.

Know Your Flies: Essential Tips For Accurate Fly Identification

Some Kansas City flies can be more invasive and dangerous than other types of flies. To effectively get rid of a fly infestation in your home, you will first need to know what kind of flies you are dealing with. Some of the most common types of flies that you are likely to find in Kansas City include:

  • Fruit flies: This is one of the smallest types commonly found in this area. The fruit fly typically measures around ⅛ inch long and has a dark-gray or black abdomen and a tan-colored thorax. As their name suggests, you commonly find them swarming around rotting fruit.
  • Sewer flies: Also called drain flies, sewer flies are small, moth-like insects that measure around ⅕  inch long. They typically have gray bodies covered in fine hairs that give them a fuzzy appearance. They aren't able to fly very well, and you often find them walking in and out of drains.
  • Cluster flies: These flies are about ½ inch long and have dark gray bodies covered in fine, yellow hairs that give them a golden tint in certain lights. They gather in clusters on windows or buildings to soak up the sun.
  • Fungus gnats: These small flies are about the same size as the fruit fly. They are only about ⅛ inch long and have a pair of large, white wings. You find them in potted plants and other areas that have moisture.

The flies in this area can be annoying. If you have a fly infestation on your property, it is only a matter of time before these bothersome bugs make their way into your home.

Troublesome Presence Of Flies In Your Home: Common Issues And Risks

Flies are more than just a nuisance; some flies can contaminate your food and make you sick. The fruit fly, for example, can carry a wide range of bacteria around on their bodies. They contaminate food with dangerous pathogens that can cause illnesses such as salmonellosis, E.  coli infection, and listeriosis.

Flies cause allergy and asthma symptoms in some people. Some types of fly larvae can cause a parasitic infestation in humans called myiasis.

Effective Fly Prevention Methods: Keep Flies At Bay

Some of the things that you can do to keep all common flies away from your home include:

  • Make sure that your drains and garbage disposals are clean
  • Take out the trash in your home often
  • Remove all standing water around your house
  • Store all fresh produce in the refrigerator or a sealed container

Flies are attracted to almost any type of food and places with plenty of water. To keep flies out, make sure that your home is clean and has no excess moisture.
